Abstract

Background : Post-anaesthetic shivering is a common complication of modern anaesthesia, it generally can be overcome by giving meperidin. Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) can be used to prevent post-anaesthetic shivering. This research is aimed to analyse the effect of MgS04 30 mg/kgBB delivery to prevent post-anaesthesia shivering on the blood magnesium level. Method : It was a Randomized pretest-posttest control group design. There was 20 subjects with inclusive criterias, 10 for meperidin group and 10 for magnesium sulfate group. The blood magnesium level of each subject in each group was measured before and after the treatment. The data were processed with computer program using independent t-test. Result :The mean of blood magnesium level before meperidin delivery was 0,670  0,1063 and after meperidin delivery was 0,551  0,1256. The mean of blood magnesium level before magnesium sulfate delivery was 0,709  0,0785 and after magnesium sulfate delivery was 1,143  0,3538. Independent t-test showed that there was significant correlation between two groups, with the p values was 0,000. Conclusion : There is a significant elevation of blood magnesium levels in patients with magnesium sulfate 30 mg/kgBB delivery.
