Abstract
Background: In thalassemia carriers occurs an ineffective erythropoiesis . Therefore, thalassemia carriers have a risk of developing iron overload, if there is an excess of iron intake. Hepsidin is a hormone that plays an important role in iron homeostasis. Erythropoiesis activity has an dominant role in hepsidin regulation. Reticulocyte count and reticulocyte index is a simple examination to determine the levels of erythropoiesis. This study aims to determine the association between reticulocyte counts and reticulocyte index to levels hepsidin on thalassemia carriers. Methods: The research design was observational with cross sectional approach. The minimum of sample were 25 respondents and consecutive sampling was conducted at the department of Clinical Pathology Dr. Kariadi and Red Cross Indonesia Semarang. Reticulocyte was count by flow cytometry, reticulocyte index was calculated using the formula% reticulocytes measured × Ht / Ht normal and hepsidin levels were measured by ELISA kits. The data was analysed by a computer program with a test level of significance (p <0.05) . Results: The results of Spearman's correlation test showed no significant correlation between reticulocyte counts and hepsidin levels (p = 0.946 and r = 0.014) and no significant correlation between reticulocyte index and hepsidin levels (p=0.867 and r=-0.035). Conclusions: There is no significant correlation between reticulocytes counts and reticulocyte index to hepsidin level in thalassemia carriers.
