Abstract

Background: Most nasopharyngeal cancer patients come to physician already at a late stage which makes the treatment become more complicated. Side effect of nasopharyngeal treatment make some patients decrease their compliance to treatment and seek for another therapy which has lesser side effect in particular complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In Indonesia survival rate in NPC patients with CAM treatment remains unknown and characteristic of CAM in Indonesia is different with other countries. This paper aims to analyze the survival rates of patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) in modern treatment of conventional and CAM Methods: It used historical Cohort study using medical records and questionnaire asked directly to the patients. Samples were newly diagnosed as NPC patients in 2007-2010. Total of samples were 102 samples chosen by consecutive sampling. NPC patients, who have missing data, were excluded in this research. Survival rate was analyzed by Kaplan Meier Test Results: The most commonly used CAM is a multivitamin and herbal medicine (52.8%). There were no significant difference between modern conventional treatment with CAM in NPC patients on late stage group(P = 0.444),aged 41-50 years old group(p=0.473) , male group (p=0.548), and female group(p=0.308) . Conclusion: Analysis of survival rates concluded that the use of CAM therapies do not affect survival rates of NPC patients.
