Abstract

Backgrounds : Nutrition and lifestyle counseling is a method to increase the awareness of people with diabetes mellitus (DM). Therefore, in turns, they will modify their diet and lifestyle and to prevent further complications of DM. This study was aimed to identify and analyze the effect of nutrition and life style counseling frequency on body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose in DM patient. Method : This was an experimental study with pre and post test methods randomized controlled group design in patients with type 2 DM. There were 26 subjects involved in this study, divided into 2 groups: control group (provided with nutrition and life style counseling initially), and treatment group (provided with nutrition and life style counseling weekly). Prior to counseling they were measured for weight and height, waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood glucose. In 8 weeks study course, there was remeasurements for each subject. Results : There were significant differences after being given counseling in the treatment group BMI (p=0,009), waist circumference (p=0,014), systolic (p=0,031), diastolic (p=0,014), blood glucose (p=0,001). In the control group there were no significant differences BMI (p=0,086), waist circumference (p=0,159), systolic (p=0,171), diastolic (p=0,078), blood glucose (p=0,308). The significant difference was identified in blood glucose level between control and treatment group (p=0,002). While others showed no significant differences; BMI (p=0,106), waist circumference (p=0,745), systolic (p=0,729), diastolic (p=0,969). Conclusion : Routine nutrition counseling and lifestyle modification may improve blood glucose level.
