Abstract

Background: One of the complications that occur in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) due to the process of atherosclerosis. This atherosclerotic process occurs in peripheral blood vessels which one manifestation is the occurrence of cognitive impairment. Severity of PAD can be assessed by the Ankle brachial index (ABI), while cognitive impairment can be assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Because the underlying process is the same disorder, research is needed to analyze the correlation between ABI score with MMSE score. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the subjects amounted to 54 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus elderly who self-examined in the geriatrics clinic of Kariadi Hospital. Study subjects sought medical records via the data in a geriatric clinic were interviewed and the measurement of blood pressure values in the home leg and hand respectively. Interviews were conducted to assess cognitive status using the MMSE, amounting to 10 questions worth a total of 30. While the blood pressure measurements performed by using a stethoscope and sphygmomanometer in a lying position. Results: The results obtained Spearman correlation test was then performed and showed a positive correlation between the left ABI values and MMSE with p = 0.000, r = 0.511, CI = 95%. While the right ABI values and MMSE showed a positive correlation with p = 0.017, r = 0.323, CI = 95%. Conclusion: The low of ABI score describes a low MMSE score or a low of cognitive function in the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
