Abstract

Background: The use of mechanical ventilators in intensive care unit in patients potentially occurrence of complications of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP). How to prevent VAP can with non-pharmacological and pharmacological. Pharmacological prevention of one of them is to use an oral antiseptic drug who also called oral hygiene. Several types of oral hygiene usually used is chlorhexidine and povidone iodine. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference of effectiveness between chlorhexidine and povidone iodine for oral hygiene in patients with mechanical ventilator in ICU assessed by thorax photo. Methods: The sample consisted of 32 patients using mechanical ventilators in the ICU RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang who have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, then divided randomly into 2 groups: group 1 (C) is given chlorhexidine 0.2% and group 2 (P) is given povidone iodine 1%. All patients in both groups performed the examination thorax photo. Performed oral hygiene every day every 12 hours and on the second day or 48 hours after application of mechanical ventilators were resumed examination thorax photo again . The results of this examination will be compared with the examination before treatment. Results: In both groups are no found significant changes in thorax photo before and after treatment. After 48 hours of treatment are no found the difference significant changes in thorax photo between the two groups. Conclusion: There is no significant difference of the thorax photo between povidone iodine treatment and chorhexidine treatment.
