Abstract

Background : An increasing number of smokers who tend to rise rapidly from year to year, even at this time Indonesia has been ranked the third largest number of smokers in the world. Heavy smokers need additional intake of antioxidants because level of beta carotene and vitamin C in blood plasma is lower when compared with non smoker. Vitamin E is also one of the important natural antioxidants and vitamins that are fat soluble and insoluble in water. Methods : This study is an experimental research laboratory with the approach of The Post Test Only Control Group Design. The study population was wistar rats that developed in the laboratory of the Universitas Negeri Semarang, is selected by simple random sample is divided into two groups where each group contained five rats. In this first study as a control group given only one stick of cigarette smoked per day and treatment group were given vitamin E 100mg/kg. Treatment given for 30 days, at day 31 performed blood sampling. Then calculated the total number of Leukocytes and neutrophils. Result : Descriptive analysis of the mean value obtained was higher in the control group in both the total number of leucocytes and neutrophils. With the Shapiro-Wilk test, obtained a normal data distribution. Parametric test results of independent T-test found significant difference between control and treatment groups in the total number of leucocytes (p=0,02). As for the control group and treatment on the number of neutrophils also showed a significant difference (p=0,04). Conclusion :There are significant differences in the total number of leucocytes and neutrophils in wistar rats exposed to cigarette smoke are given vitamin E with those not given vitamin E.
