Abstract
Background: Nigella sativa is one of the traditional plants for the treatment of a variety of sicknesses including parasitic diseases. Malaria is a tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Nigella sativa oil on parasitemias in the Plasmodium berghei infected Balb-c mice. Methods: This was a laboratory experimental research. The method used was The 4-day Suppresive Test which was given intervention from the zero day until the third day. Study population was Balb-c mice, sample was divided into 4 groups with simple random sampling with 5 mice each group. In this study, one group was given only distilled water as control and 3 treatment groups fed with various dosage of Nigella sativa oil 50 µl/kg; 100 µl/kg; 200 µl/kg. Everyday from the first day until the fourth day, parasitemias were determined and counted ED-50. Result: Probit Analyse for counting ED-50, showed that ED-50 is dose 33,157 µl/kg. Based on log dose-effect curve, probit equation on chart are y = 0,4784x – 0,0865; R2 = 0,915, meaning have a strong relationship between x and y. Percentage of effect from each dose were P1 = 0,701%, P2 = 0,921%, and P3 were 0,989%. Conclusion: Nigella sativa oil administration is able to decrease the parasitemias compared to control group. Based on probit analyse, that ED-50 is dose 33,157 µl/kg.
