Abstract
Background: Dandruff is one of fungi infections caused by Pityrosporum ovale (P.ovale) that is common in Indonesia. Topical therapy such as ketoconazole are used by society to cure dandruff. However, traditional therapies from nature are also used as an anti-dandruff, one of them is the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit that has antifungal effects. This study aims to compare in vitro comparison of mangosteen pericarp extract (Garcinia mangostana Linn) with 2% ketoconazole inhibiting the growth of P.ovale in dandruff case. Methods: This study was an experimental research laboratoris design with post-test only control group using 30 samples of cultured P.ovale (+) from dandruff patients who had criterias for clinical and microscopic examination. Samples were implanted on the medias of Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) + Olive oil + mangosteen pericarp extract (Garcinia mangostana Linn), SDA + Olive oil +ketoconazole 2%, SDA + Olive oil as a positive control and SDA + Olive oil + formalin as a negative control. Those medias were incubated at 37 ° C for 24-48 hours. Data were obtained by looking at whether or not Pityrosporum ovale colonies growth on these medias. Results: From the 30 SDA + Olive oil medias+ ketoconazole 2%, 28 medias were not grown with P.ovale, meanwhile from the 30 SDA + Olive oil + mangosteen pericarp extract (Garcinia mangostana Linn), 27 medias were not grown with P.ovale, From fisher-exact test were obtained result p= 1.000. Conclusion: Mangosteen pericarp extract (Garcinia mangostana Linn)100% is comparable with 2% ketoconazole inhibiting the growth of Pityrosporum ovale in dandruff case
