Abstract

Introduction: Prevalence of obesity in the world is increasing and it becomes global health problem. One of the impacts of obesity are physical and cardiovascular problems. Harvard step test and 20m shuttle run test can be used to measure cardiovascular fitness. Objective of this research is to determine the association between Body Mass Index (BMI) with cardiovascular fitness in obese children measured by Harvard step test and 20m Shuttle run test. Method: Cross sectional study was conducted to 31 students of Bernadus Elementary School Semarang in August 2010. Cardiovascular fitness level was measured by Harvard step test and 20m shuttle run test. Anthropometric measurement was taken before exercise. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlation. Results: The average age of boys 10,7 (0,68) years, height 141,8 (6,28) cm, weight 53,3 (9,30) kg, BMI 26,45 (3,69)kg/m2, Harvard step test score 54,7 (3,88)kg/m2, and 20m shuttle run test (VO2max) 20,30 (1,25)ml/kg/min. Average age of girls 10,7 (0,65) years, height 146,2 (10,9) cm, weight 56,3 (7,10) kg, BMI 26,38 (2,11)kg/m2, Harvard step test score 50,8 (2,29), and 20m shuttle run test (VO2max) 21,04 (1,06)ml/kg/min. Correlations between BMI and Harvard step test score on boys (p = 0.029) (r =- 0.029), girls (p = 0.955) (r =- 0.070). Correlation between BMI and 20m Shuttle run test (VO2max) on boys (p = 0.003) (r =- 0.577), girls (p = 0.896) (r =- 0.061). Conclusion: There are negative correlation on boys, and no relationship on girls between BMI and cardiovascular fitness measured by Harvard step test and 20m shuttle run test
