Abstract
Background : Nephrotic syndrome is the kidney disease that often occurs in children and they will usually get the weight gain due to edema. The duration of weight loss in patients with nephrotic syndrome still controversial because it is influenced by various factors. Objective : To determine the association between renal function and albumin levels with the duration of weight loss in children with initial attack of nephrotic syndrome. Methods : A retrospective cohort design of 30 children with nephrotic syndrome aged 1-13 years through the medical records of RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang during January 2007 to December 2010. The data were anlalyzed with Chi Square or Fisher tests. Results : The mean duration of weight loss was 9 (2-35) days. There was a association between renal function with the duration of weight loss (p = 0.004) There was a association between albumin levels with the duration of weight loss (p = 0.002). The relative risk of poor renal function (GFR <90 (mL/min/1.73m2) for a long weight loss (> 10 days) was 3.26 times (95% CI = 1.32 - 8.09). Relative risk of very low levels of albumin (<1.5 g / dL) for a long weight loss (> 10 days) iwas 7.52 times (95% CI = 1.13 - 49.99) Conclusions : There was association between renal function and albumin levels with the duration of weight loss in children with initial attack of nephrotic syndrome. Keywords : nephrotic syndrome, duration of weight loss, renal function, albumin levels.
