Abstract

Harmonics are a problem that should be solved in electric power system. It will influence on electric power system quality, because it will causes the distortion both of current and voltage due to non-linier load at electric network. So that it is needed a filter to reduce harmonic of current and voltage. One of method to reduce harmonic is by using passive filter installed at the electric network. In this research the passive filters used are single tuned, double tuned, second order high-pass, and c-type high-pass that designed by using simulink matlab 7.6. In designing of passive filter needs reactive power compensation exactly to determine parameter of R, L, C filter in order to reduce harmonic in optimal. The parameter of R, L, C passive filter will be calculated by using GUI (Grafical User Interface) matlab 7.6. After that, passive filter will be tested into a model of network IEEE 9 bus that designed by using simulink matlab 7.6. Whereas the performance of passive filter will be analyzed by comparing of harmonic which stated in Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of current and voltage before and after installed the filter due to converter 6 pulse and converter 12 pulse to IEEE 152-1992 standard. The results obtained show that THD of current and voltage by using converter 6 pulse are higher than converter 12 pulse. After installing passive filter, THD of current and voltage for converter 6 pulse and converter 12 pulse will reduce to limit IEEE 152-1992 standard. The results of research also show that passive filter has the best performance for reducing THD of voltage and current respectively are the combination of c-type high-pass filter with second order high-pass filter and the combination of double tuned filter with second order high-pass filter for converter 6 pulse and the combination of single tuned filter with second order high-pass filter and the combination of c-type high-pass filter with second order high-pass filter for converter 12 pulse. On the other hand, installation of passive filter also increase the ability of instrument (converter) to reach maximum power capacity for suplying load. Keywords: harmonic, non-linier load, passive filter, total harmonic distortion, converter 6 pulse, converter 12 pulse
