Abstract

Drying is a way / process to remove or partially remove water from a material, by evaporating most of the water it contains by using heat energy. Heat transfer canoccur due to a significant temperature difference between the two surfaces. Rotary dryer is classified as direct dryers, where the heating media of contract familiar with wet material to be dried. The liquid in the wet material will evaporate and the heatingis carried along with medium hot air or hot gas. In the experiment used the peanut as the experimental material with permanent variabel is the weight of materials, and changing variable is the temperature that thetemperature variation of 65 º C, 75 º C and 85 º C. Drying is done until a constantweight. The rate of drying at various temperatures the longer it will decrease. The optimum drying rate occurred at minute 20. Driying at variable temperature of 65 ºC has a rate of 0.0790 lb/ft2jam optimum drying, drying on a variable temperature 75 ºC has an optimum drying rate of 0.116 lb/ft2jam and drying on a variable temperature 85 ºC has a rate of 0.130 lb/ft2jam optimum drying. The rate of drying the moisture content of materials in early stages is large (the rate of drying during the period of declining/faling rate period), then the rate ofdecline in water levels move closer to a constant at the end of the drying process(drying rate in the period constant / constant rate period), and the longer time dryingthe drying rate decreases, because the water content in peanuts less. Keywords: drying, temperature, time, rate of drying
