STRATEGI PENGELOLAAN KAWASAN MANGROVE SEBAGAI UPAYA KONSERVASI YANG BERKELANJUTAN DI KECAMATAN TUGU KOTA SEMARANG

Abstract

ABSTRACT Physical damage of coastal and marine areas in the Tugu District Semarang City leads degradation of mangrove ecosystems. The problems that arise is how the existing condition causes damage to mangrove areas and the management, and the need for strategies of sustainable management of mangrove areas in the Tugu District Semarang City. The purpose of this research is to identify the existing condition causes damage to mangrove areas and the management of mangrove areas, and pursue a strategy of sustainable management of mangrove areas. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The primary data sources are interviews and observations on mangrove ecosystems and conservation activities, as well as the institutions that exist in the society and activities that have been done by the Municipal Government of Semarang. Analysis of research using SWOT analysis. The results shows that reduction in mangrove area is due to coastal border damage caused by mangrove cutting for intensive aquaculture areas in the 1980s, 3W (Goats, Humans, Crabs), reclamation that resulted in coastal erosion, natural phenomena such as large waves and high tides, land ownership, and the absence of regulations on coastal areas management, especially mangroves. Mangrove area was approximately 42.20 ha or 18.76% of the planned natural area for coastal erosion retention. Mangrove rehabilitation activities in the Tugu District Semarang City has been done by government agencies and private. Communities have formed some groups whose activities are in collaboration with the private sector and government in order to protect and prevent coastal damage by mangrove planting activities. The strategies is by designing coastal border area as mangrove rehabilitation activities and coastal protection from the threat coastal area development and climate change impacts.
