Abstract

Brake lining is one of the important component vehicle that is functional to reduce speed. Brake lining material must have special characteristic including friction coefficient value to give optimal security and safety. Waste material which can be developed to become brake lining material is waste plastic. In this research developed powder metallurgy with various composition and temperature from cast iron powder, brass powder, waste plastic powder and asbestos fibre. Matter waste plastic of polyethylene is processed in centrifugal atomization of rotary electrode type for to continued mixing and sieving to get PE powder. Then powder PE was mixed cast iron powder, brass powder and asbestos fibre by use of blender and compaction at typical composition to be made tensile strength specimen. Composition 5:4:1:1 become making reference of brake lining prototype. brake lining made to brake lining cast with pressuring of 7,78 kg/mm2 at compaction engine and sintering at temperature 160oC during 150 minutes. Then brake lining prototype is weighing its mass and hardness test by use Brinell Hardness Tester and that is continued characteristic test of brake lining to get abrasive and hardness value. Result of characteristic brake lining test, abrasive of brake lining prototype with brake torque 1,78 Nm during 30,45 and 60 minutes is 460 mg, 490 mg, and 580 mg with maximum temperature of brake lining prototype is 139,9oC. This is caused by brake lining prototype to apply binder PE is having characteristic thermoplastic and transformation and transformation of crystal structure PE as result of transformation of transition of its molten temperature.
