Abstract

Recycling is one of the great solutions to keep our nature in a better condition. One of these processes is brake pad’s production which uses the waste of cast iron, brass, polyethylene and also asbestos fiber. In order to make it in a good quality, the process production must be controlled well. Because of that, match composition must be done with composition variation each material that make brake pad with strength of flattening mechanic and good braking ability. Every material has influence to quality of brake pad yielded. There is five various composition with percentage cast iron equal to 56%-82%, powder polyethylene 7%-15%, brass 10%-31%, and asbestos fiber shifts 1%-19% with sintering 160oC and holding time 150 minutes. After variation, specimen brake pad will be tested hard value with method Brinnel Hardness and after that analyzed the characteristic with examination of performance to know improvement of hardness and mass reduction. From test result that optimum composition at cast iron 82%, powder polyethylene 7%, brass 10% and asbestos fiber shifts 1%. In this test proced prototype hardness at 20.8 BHN and wheathering 200 mg while fabric brake pad have hardness value 22.8 BHN with wheatering 100 mg.
