Abstract

Background: Nasal obstruction is a common symptom (86%) in patients with allergic rhinitis. Measurements of nasal obstruction that had been used are very complex, expensive, and not always available in every health institution. VAS is a simple measurement, and can be done at all health facilities, but the diagnostic accuracy compared with PNIF had not been reported. Objective: To analyze the diagnostic accuracy of VAS compared to PNIF in measurement of nasal obstruction in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis. Method: This was a diagnostic test study. A total of 61 patients with persistent allergic rhinitis who arrived at the clinic of ENT departement of Dr. Kariadi hospital who met the study criteria was measured by VAS and PNIF before and after decongestion test. The results were analyzed to determine sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of the VAS. Result: They were 61 persistent allergic rhinitis patients, mild 28 (45,9%), moderate-severe 33 (54,1%), ranged between 15-54 year old, 42 (68,9%) women, 19 (31,1%) male. VAS had a sensitivity of 84%, specificity of 18%, PPV Of 73%, NPV of 30%. Conclusion: Accuracy VAS compared to PNIF : sensitivity 84%, specificity 18%, PPV 73%, NPV 30%. VAS can be used as screening test of nasal obstruction in patients with persistent allergic rhinitis in health services that have no facilities of nasal obstruction measurement. Keywords: nasal obstruction in persistent allergic rhinitis, VAS, PNIF, diagnostic test.
