Abstract
Background: Ischemic stroke comprises the majority cases of stroke caused by thrombosis or embolism in blood vessels of the brain due to atherosclerosis. Increased levels of fibrinogen which is associated with intimamedia thickness of carotid arteries and plasma fibrinogen may act as a systemicmarker of atherosclerosis in the carotid artery. Objectives: To analysis the association of fibrinogen levels with intima-media thickness of the internal carotid artery in post-ischemic stroke patients in Dr. Kariadi General Hospital, Semarang, Indonesia. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted from January 2011 – March 2011 with 33 patients. Samples were taken consecutively. Subjects underwent a series of procedures consisting of filling questionnaires, neurological examination, and laboratory blood examination. IMT examination of the internal carotid artery was performed using carotid duplex ultrasound. Data analysis was done by using bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: There were significant differences between levels of fibrinogen with intima-media thickness of the internal carotid artery (p = 0.013). There were also a significant differences between the age of the intima-media thickness of the internal carotid artery (p = 0.036). There were significant associations between BMI with intima-media thickness of the internal carotid artery (p = 0.029). Conclusion: There are associations between levels of fibrinogen with intimamedia thickness of internal carotid artery in post-ischemic stroke patients. Key words: Ischemic stroke, fibrinogen levels, intima-media thickness of internal carotid artery.
