Abstract

Rice hull ash is a waste product of the rice industry and usually used for cleaning the household equipment. The usage of rice hull ash need to be increased, because rice hull ash contains about 94,5% of silica and very potential for the production of silica based product. This research has been studied the synthesis of silica gel from rice hull, ash (RHA) involved simple method and improved method. Silica gel known as inorganic material which has many aplications in industry and laboratory. Silica extracted with 1.5 N NaOH to form sodium silicate solution. Silica gel known as inorganic material which has many aplications in industry and laboratory. A simple method was done by adding 6 M HC1 solution into Na2SiO3 solution to produce silica gel and an improved method worked in opposite way, Na2SiO3 solution was added into HCl solution. Gelation in simple method was very quick and formed rigid gel, but improved method had very slow gelation and softer gel. Characterization of silica gel was had done by XRD, IR, AAS instrument, and also tested its adsorption activity to purify the crude palm oil and reduce the presence of free fatty acid. X-ray diffraction pattern showed the amorphous nature of silika gel. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data indicated the presence of siloxane and silanol groups. Atomic absorption spectroscopy resulted that the highest concentration of sodium was going to silica gel of pH 3. Silica gel pH 3 also the most effective adsorbent in purifying the crude palm oil with its adsorption activity value was 46.03 %. The ability of silica gel of pH 3 .to adsorp the FFA (free fatty acid) could decrease the acid number from 7.042 to 0.019.
