Abstract
Vulcanology is the study about various aspects dealing with volcanos. The vulcano brings two effects, positive as well as negative effects. Related to this case, the role of chemistry can not be ignored. By analysing chemical elements or compounds produced, the characteristics of vulcano activities can be predicted and hopefully can be controlled. Methods which are used in this research are Gravimetry and Spectrofotometry (by using AAS Perkin Elmer 3110 and Spectronic-20). For this purpose, 5 samples were taken from several periods. Sample I (Merapi Lava) was taken from the period of 1911¬1913, Sample II from 1954 Merapi Lava, Sample III from 1984 Hot Ash, Sample IV from 1994 Merapi Lava and Sample V from 1995 Merapi Lava. The results show that all samples contain SiO2 element. It means that Merapi vulcano's rock is Acid (Andesit rocks). From this result, it can be concluded that Merapi vulcano is more dominant in explosive character than in efusive one in term of the flowing out of magma to the surface of vulcano.
