Abstract

Natural zeolite had not been used maximally because of treatment cost. One solution is to use unactivated zeolite because it is estimated effective enough_ In this research, activated natural zeolite and unactivated natural zeolite were used as adsorbent of acetic acid, a component waste found in textile industry. Comparisons were used activated carbon as adsorbent and hidrocloric acid as adsorbate. Determinated parameter were optimum adsorbtion time, optimum concentration of adsorbate, porous volume of adsorbent and exchanged Ha. The research result showed that both activated zeolite and unactivated zeolite were able to adsorb acetic acid at the same optimum concentration (1,201 N), nevertheless activated zeolite had a shorter adsorbtion times (60 minutes) from unactivated zeolite (90 minutes). As adsorbate comparison, hidrocloric acid had a number of exchanged Na larger than acetic acid, 93,76 ppm and 26,64 ppm for Hidrocloric acid and acetic acid respectively.. And as adsorbent comparison, activated carbon was able to adsorb acetic acid higher and faster than both of that zeolite. The decreasing of porous volume at zeolite before and after adsorbtion was smaller than activated carbon, 1,659 % for unactivated zeolite, 1,962 % for activated zeolite and 32,801 % for activated carbon_ The result above showed that there was no acetic acid molecule entered in to zeolite porous, while acetic acid molecule could entere in to activated carbon porous_ From the number of exchanged Na (analysed with AAS and IR spectrum) explained that adsorbtion mechanism of zeolite with acetic acid was cation exchange_ To sum up from this research that unactivated zeolite was effective enough to adsorb acetic acid and was less effective however, than activated zeolite and activated carbon. 8911.1 1111 3 3 11 U WWI 1 L tie, IA- ILI II) .11 LI L I IILL IL3.
