Abstract
Background : Nowadays, preeclampsia is still the major complication of pregnancy, labour and postpartum period. Recently, there are not ideal ways to do early prediction of preeclampsia to the subsequent pregnancy. Activin-A level is a potential candidate to be a laboratory marker as early prediction to the onset of preeclampsia in early pregnancy. The goal of this study is to determine the correlation between activin-A level in the second trimester with the occurrence of preclampsia in the subsequent gestational age of pregnancy and also the cut-off point of activin-A level which can be used as a predictor of preeclampsia. Method : This study was done at antenatal clinics of Dr.Kariadi hospital, Tugurejo Hospital, Ngesrep and Halmahera Centers of Primary Care in Semarang, during October 2005 until May 2006. It was a prospective cohort study. Seventy-five pregnant women with normotension at 21-25 weeks’ gestation were examined activin- A level and followed-up until 2 hours postpartum or felt into preeclampsia. Result : From 75 examined pregnant women with normotension, there were 11 cases going to be preeclampsia and 64 as normotension cases. Activin-A level in preeclampsia group is more greater increased than normotension group. The increased activin A serum level in pregnant women was found before the onset of clinical signs and also the change of the other biologic markers, like hematocrit and trombosit. Based on ROC curve, it was found cut-off point of activin-A was 29.90 ng/mL. Summary : The increased of Activin A serum level with 29.90 ng/mL as the cutoff point of activin A level has a correlation with the occurrence of preeclampsia and can be used as a predictor of it in the subsequent gestational age. Keywords :Activin A, preeclampsia, normotension
