Abstract

The mass media is an institution that must run press journalism rules carefully. As one example is the mass media are required to present the news objectively. Objectivity as the standard for the presentation of the news produced factual and balanced. Objectivity determine the quality of information and mass media credibility. This research was conducted to determine the application of objectivity in reporting Yogyakarta’s Special Status conflict in Kedaulatan Rakyat starting November 27th, 2010 until February 1st, 2011. The researcher using a method of quantitative content analysis with two-dimensional objectivity of Westerstahl (1983) which is then broken down by Denis McQuail (1992). Namely, the dimension of Factuality and the dimension Impartiality. The results showed that Kedaulatan Rakyat are still reluctant to function as a press agency with the percentage of 53%. In the moderate category are still ignoring the positive and negative evaluations, conduct dramatization, and subjective interpretation as raw material for news journalists. Then the low category of objectivity is having 11% scoring 3-4. For the scoring 3, in appendix No. 29 (Presiden Paksakan Gubernur Utama), journalists highlighted over the decision as president to create new positions for the Sultan later, the Gubernur Utama. Coverage confirmed in the process of submitting draft being debated among members of parliament by the pro and cons. The high category of objectivity (7-8) got 36% in total. The highest points (8) when all indicators of objectivity is fulfilled. That is the news that imply support by many parties to make the determination of Governor of DIY than the election. On point 7, although it is in the category of high objectivity, journalists use the psychological facts as raw materials in the form of news that the subjective interpretation of the facts of the situation. In addition, Kedaulatan Rakyat’s journalist in this category still doing the dramatization and not conduct a balance evaluations.
