Abstract

Indonesia is one of wood and furniture exporter in the world. But Indonesia’s product is less competitive than product from the other countries, one of them is Malaysia. The low technological mastery and understanding of the mechanical properties of wood to be one of problem cause, the usage raw material and workmanship of wood not in accordance with standard specifications and types of wood to make products to be not fit the desired quality. To reduce these errors and provide information about the strength of wood in accordance with standard specifications, the authors conducted tests and analysis of mechanical properties which are very influential on the quality and strength of wood so that the raw material in accordance with the desired specifications on furniture products. Testing of mechanical properties of wood to determine the strength of wood is done in three times of testing in accordance with the line of the test fiber, circle of wood and moisture content. Wood used in testing and will be analyzed are mahogany and jackfruit. Because the wood was often used in furniture industry, the wood testing are three point bending test, compression test and tensile test. After obtaining the test result data, then be compared to the mechanical properties of wood mahogany and jackfruit. Based on test data that has been done, longitudinal fiber line testing have the best mechanical properties among the other fiber line testing. While the mahogany has a better mechanical properties than jackfruit wood of all tests performed. However, if viewed from its economic value, mahogany has a higher price.
