Abstract

Result of activities of birth helping by a midwife in District of Tasikmalaya in the past five years had not been success. Therefore, decreasing of maternal and neonatal mortality rate cannot be reached quickly. Aim of this research was to analyze some factors related to the work performance of a midwife in helping birth process in Districts of Tasikmalaya. Type of this research was observational using Cross-Sectional approach. Number of sample was 118 persons. Collecting data used questionnaires. Data were analyzed quantitatively using Rank-Spearman test. Most of the respondents have sufficients capability (38,1 %), good experience (40,7 %), good learning process (37,3 %), low perception of reward (38,1 %), low perception of equipments (39,8 %), moderate attitude (39,8 %), moderate perception to work burden (42,4 %), moderate work performance of a midwife (42,4 %), and un-reached target of helping birth process (84,4 %). The factors that have significant relationship with work performance of midwife in helping birth process namely capability (p value = 0,002), experience (p value = 0,000), learning process (p value = 0,000), reward (p value = 0,003), and resources/equipments (p value = 0,000). Besides those variables, factors of attitude of health workers (p value = 0,000), motivation (p value = 0,020), work burden (p value = 0,007), and attitude of health workers (p value = 0,000), and perception to work burden (p value = 0,000) also have significant relationship with work performance of a midwife in helping birth process. To improve coverage of birth helping, Tasikmalaya District Health Office should provide opportunities for improving capability of midwives through continuing study, training, following seminar, giving reward through work facilities, planning the budgeting gradually for scientific activities, planning training activities, planning the supplying of equipments, and replacing damage equipments. Besides that, the office should plan supplying of simple report form, and distribute vehicle for midwives. Midwives should improve their knowledge especially that relates to helping of birth process through following training, seminar, and continuing study even by using their cost.
