Abstract
The Aviator is a kind of biographycal drama movie which was released in 2004 and directed by Martin Scorcese. This movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning five. The Aviator is tells about Howard Hughes life from the late 1920s to 1942. Howard Hughes was a phenomenally successful businessman, aviator, movie producer, movie director, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. Beside his succeed, he had an eccentric behavior because of his Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. He had an obsessional fear of germs and compulsively tried to protect himself from them. This thesis will analyzes Howard Hughes as the main character of film. The writer interested with Hughes’s life and also his eccentric behavior that caused by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The aim of this thesis are to analyzes all about Hughes’s OCD, starting from the symptoms, the causes, and the treatments. To reach the aim, the writer uses library research method to get some information and knowledge that support the topic of her study. Besides, the writer also applies two approach methods. Firstly, the writer uses an exponential approach. The exponential approach is uses to understand the theme, characters, plot, and settings. Secondly, the writer uses a psychological approach about OCD. Meanwhile, the writer also analyzes the intrinsic and extrinsic aspect of the movie. The intrinsic aspect consists of narratology and cinematography. The writer uses the theory of A.J Greimas to analyzes the character and the plot. To analyzes the extrinsic aspect, the writer uses the theory of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. From the analyzes, the writer conclude that Hughes include into thingker ritualizes and washer & cleaner category. Based on Freud theory, he was kind of the anal psychosexual stage because he tend toward excessive cleanliness. Then based on Maher, his OCD was caused by the memories of his past life with his mother.
