Abstract
Refractory is a material normally used in coating walls of steel smelting induction furnace linings. Because the refractory is a material that resistant to relatively high temperatures and is able to isolate the heat in induction furnace linings. Many of the steel smelting indstri not know the characteristics of refractory materials that they use for induction furnace lining which they use to melt steel. They just buy a refractory material according to the needs of fusion that they would do. This study aims to determine the shape and grain size, chemical composition, density and porosity of refractory materials used in steel smelting induction furnace linings PT. Suyuti Sido Maju Ceper Klaten. Research conducted are meshing, X-RD, and sintering processes. Results of the study showed that the grain size of the raw materials used in steel smelting furnace lining is larger than 2mm up to less than 0.025mm. Aggregate to form large grains are sub-rounded and rounded. The chemical composition of refractory material making up a large aggregate and small aggregate is periclase (MgO). The value of density and porosity at sintering temperature of 12500C, 13500C, 14500C is 3.05 g/cm3, 3.08 g/cm3, 3.12 g/cm3 for the density and 12.9 %, 11.6 %, 6.8 % for porosity.
