Abstract

Since 1980 the needs of aluminum alloy in the automotive components such as pistons, engine blocks, cylinder heads and valves continues increasing until now. To reduce consumption of aluminum will require recycling of aluminum. Particularly in Indonesia waste piston reaches 6765.5 tons per year, if the piston can be recycled into new materials will save the new aluminum and give for development of the field of material science. The purpose of this research was to study for making piston from piston waste materials and ADC 12 with reinforced by inserting ST 60 and cast iron of the first groove of piston ring with gravity casting process. This place was selected because failure of frequently to meet the piston is a wear of piston groove first. Research works on conducted by pouring temperature variation of 700, 750, 800oC and using with; 75% waste piston + 25% ADC 12, 50% waste piston + 50% ADC 12, 25% waste piston + 75% ADC 12, pure waste piston and pure ADC 12 with insert ST 60 and cast iron. Material characterization testing was conducted by analyzing the chemical composition, microstructure, micro and macro hardness and shear strength. Results show that prototype alloy pistons with the best materials for micro hardness 113.2 HVN, shear strength of 24.58 MPa ware obtained at the composition of 25% waste piston + 75% ADC 12, insert is cast iron with pouring temperature of 7000C.
