This research analyzes the comparison of plastic deformation of the contact between a sphere and a rough surface in the fully plastic contact regime. The analysis is related to the volume change. This volume change caused the deformation as a result of the increased stress and strain in the steady state condition. The calculation of the plastic deformation is aimed to understand the effect of substrate thicknes on the plastic deformation of its asperity. If there are substrate with different thickness but with the same material property, when they are loaded, the plastic deformation of each body will not be the same. Experiment is conducted to validate the result of FEA simulation with ANSYS 9.0. It is found that the plastic deformation between a sphere and a rough surface is not the same. This because of the dimension of the thickness from each speciment. The material property used in this modeling is elastic-perfectly plastic. The specimen with the smaller thickness will have the bigger asperity plastic deformation compared to the thicker thickness.
