Abstract

Popular Culture is values that come from advertising, the entertainment industry, the media, and icons of style. Motion picture that also called movies, films, or the cinema are one of the most popular forms of entertainment, enabling people to immerse themselves in an imaginary world for a short period of time. But movies can also teach people about history, science, human behavior, and many other subjects. In this research, North Country film as the writer’s object research described some women issues in feminism approach. This film has succeeded in drawing public attention to inequality between women and men and to the structures within society that belittle and work against women. The main character has led to a reconsideration of women’s role in the workplace, resulting in policies that promote equal pay, equal opportunities, and women equality in the family and society. This research is a library research. In the library research, the writer collected books, archives, and documents that are related to the North Country film. North Country is an Academy Award-nominated film directed by Niki Caro and released in 2005. It stars Charlize Theron as a female worker at a mining company who is sexually harassed and leads a class-action lawsuit against her employer for failing to protect her and other female employees. The problems of the research are: finding how the woman struggle in the work place, family, and society that is described in North Country film. All of the data was analyzed by the writer in exponential approach and feminism approach especially in liberal feminism. In the exponential approach, the writer included two elements of story that are narrative element and cinematography element. From analyzing the research object, the writer finds out that there is woman struggle in North Country film done by Josey as the main character. The struggle covers three aspects that is struggle in the work place, in the family, and in the society. These struggles were connected with cinematography components such as plot, character, setting, and theme.
