Abstract
Component of machine that contacted and rubbed each other will be worn out. Wear of engineering components is often a critical factor influencing the product life. Prediction and simulation of wear is therefore an important matter in engineering. Numerical simulations of wear of a steel cylinder against a steel plate are performed with a commercial finite element software ABAQUS 6.5-1. The simulation is aimed to determine pressure on contact area, and then combined with Archard’s theory to calculate the wear depth. The wear model used in the simulations is global. The global wear model gives an opportunity to predict the change in shape of the surfaces. In this research the simulation is modeled as a cylinder on plate unlubricated static contact. An elastic Steel material is used in this research. The prediction result of wear with FEM is compared with Oqvist experimental results. Wear depth is calculated as function of sliding distance. The results shows that the wear depth increases as the increasing of sliding distance, but the wear rate decreases due to the increasing of contact area. The simulated topography of the surfaces was compared with Oqvist experimental results and the agreement was good.
