Abstract

ABSTRACT Background. Malaria is one of the main health problems in children. The interaction between immunity and malaria is complex, involving mostly immunity system. Zinc is a micronutrien that plays esential role in many aspect of human metabolism. Study of interaction between zinc and Interleukin-12 in malaria endemic areas was limited. Aims. To determine the correlation between zinc plasma levels and Interleukin-12 (IL-12) in 6-14 years old children in malaria endemic areas Methods. A cross sectional study was done on 103 children 6-14 years old in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Kalitapas and MI Bleber village, Purworejo district from March until April 2009. Plasma zinc levels was measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Interleukin-12 was measured by ELISA, thin and or thick blood film and Rapid Diagnostic Test was used for determine malaria infection status. Statistical analysis was done using Independent T-test, Mann Whitney, Pearson, and Spearman. Result. Subject: 103 children 6-14 years old. Boys predominate, with mean age 9,7±1,9 years. Mean plasma zinc levels was 146,38 ± 41,14 µg/dL. Mean IL-12 concentration was 3,3 ± 3,48 pg/ml. Negative malaria status predominate (98,1%). Correlation test between zinc plasma levels and IL-12 concentration was positive (r=+0,20, p=0,04). Conclusion. There is a significant weak correlation between zinc plasma levels with IL-12 concentration. Keywords. Zinc plasma levels, Interleukin-12, malaria.
