Abstract

Ideational meaning is a meaning that has a relationship with a phenomenon including thing (animate or inanimate, abstract or concrete), event (what the things are or do) and circumstances surrounding. Usually ideational meaning is represented by participants, process and circumstances. In other words, ideational meaning can be said as a grammar for making reflection of the world that uses transitivity systems as the whole grammatical source for interpreting the event. For example the song writers of Breakaway, I Believe I Can fly, We Will Not Go Down and White Flag tries to express ideational meaning of each lyrics by using transitivity systems. Here, the writer would like to identify transitivity systems of Breakaway, I Believe I Can Fly, We Will Not Go Down and White Flag to find the ideational meanings of the song lyrics. In analyzing the data, the writer uses metode padan and metode agih. Metode padan is used to classify the song lyrics into a noun, verb, and so on. Metode agih is also used to identify the song lyrics by using preposition, adverb, subject, object and so on. Moreover, the writer uses three approaches; those are transitivity system (M.A.K Halliday), emotive devices (Stephen Ullmann) and figures of speech theory (Geofrey N. Leech and Michael H. Short). Theory of transitivity system used to interpret ideational meanings of the song lyrics and the emotive devices are also used to reflect ideational meanings. The third theory, figures of speech theory, is also used by the writer because it has a relationship with one of emotive devices named lexical devices. The result shows that the song lyrics of Breakaway, I Believe I Can Fly, We Will Not Go Down and White Flag reflect the ideational meanings of having motivation, having will, having optimism, having dream, believing in God, working hard, having initiative and the experience of failure. Those ideational meanings are description of the spirit for making the dream comes true.
