Abstract

Contact mechanics is a science in mechanical engineering which studies the contact mechanism between two bodies. This research compares the plastic deformation between two hemispheres with different radius ratio. The wear-time curve consists of three wear regimes: running-in or break-in or wear-in, the steady state and accelerated wear or wear-out. The plastic deformation in this research is related to the running-in regime. In this regime, the deformation and wear rate will increase progressively until the steady state regime is reached. This research uses finite element analysis software, ABAQUS 6.5-1 to simulate the contact between two hemispheres. Elastic-plastic material is used to perform material behaviour. The radius ratios of two contacting hemispheres start from 1-7. The experiments are conducted to compare the finite element results and perform good agreement. The results shows that the increase of the hemisphere radius ratio will decrease the ratio of plastic deformation. For the higher radius ratio, the smaller hemisphere performs a larger plastic deformation than the larger hemisphere. This research shows a different result if it is compared with Johnson and Shercliff hypotheses.
