Abstract
Background and purpose: Stroke is the main cause of neurological disorder which may end as irreversible deformity and death. The first 48 hours glucose level rise in acute phase ischemic stroke patients is one among many factors that influences the morbidity and mortality rates. The objective of this study was to determine correlation between random blood glucose level of acute phase ischemic stroke patients on admission and length of stay or time of death. Methods: This is a cohort retrospective study using medical records data. Samples of this study are acute phase ischemic stroke patients in Dr. Kariadi hospital Semarang from January 2005 to December 2007. Results: 138 first attack acute phase ischemic stroke patients were included in this study. 96(70%) patients discharged (alive) with mean value of on admission random blood glucose level was 148,4±68,6 mg/dL and mean value of hospitalization day was 20 days, counted from the 30th day of hospitalization. while 42(30%) patients died with mean value of on admission random blood glucose level was 253,3±177,1 mg/dL and mean value of hospitalization day before patients died was 25 days, counted from the 30th day of hospitalization. Spearman correlation test between on admission random blood glucose level and time of discharge was r=-0,281(p<0,05). While between on admission random blood glucose level and time of death was r=0,303(p<0,05). Conclusions: Elevated random blood glucose correlates with increased length of stay. Elevated random blood glucose correlates with decreased hospitalization day before patients died. Keywords: ischemic stroke, random blood glucose, length of stay, time of death.
