Abstract

Background: Epidemiological data regarding the distribution of age and sex in types of epilepsy is very useful toward the management of epilepsy in clinic or in society. But studies regarding this kind of data are still very few in Indonesia and even the world. Methods: The research data is secondary data, which is medical report of patients with epilepsy in RSUP Dr Kariadi Semarang in period of 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2007. The data includes types of epilepsy, age (onset of epilepsy) and gender. Data then, classified into general epilepsy, partial epilepsy and unclassified epilepsy. Data is analyzed with Chi square crosstabs table with 95% of significant level using SPSS for Windows version 15. Results: 302 cases were obtained and only 180 cases satisfied the inclusion criteria. 96 (53,3%) patients were developing epilepsy at childhood-onset, 71 (39,4%) patients were at adult-onset and 13 (7,2%) patients were at elderly-onset From Chi square tests, age differences in types of epilepsy were noted with significance value of p = 0,029. Type of epilepsy that is noted to develop more likely at childhood-onset was generalized epilepsy, especially in the first 5 years of life. But at elderly and adult-onset, partial epilepsy was noted to develop more than the other type. There were no gender differences noted in types of epilepsy (p = 0,694. Conclusions: There are age differences in types of epilepsy, this result suggest age susceptibility to the development of certain type of epilepsy. There are no gender differences in types of epilepsy. Keywords : age differences, gender differences, type of epilepsy, epilepsy
