Abstract
Background: Based on the former research, Andrographis paniculata as an alternative drug for malaria has been proved to hamper the development of Plasmodium berghei ANKA in vitro, elongate survival and reduce the parasit level in vivo. Invitro research proved that Nitric Oxide (NO) has a protective effect since oxidative NO product has parasitidal effect on plasmodium. However, it has not been known yet how the correlation between NO value and parasit level on Balb/c mice which is given A. paniculata and inoculated by P. berghei ANKA. The purpose of this research was to prove that correlation. Method: This experimental laboratories research applied post test only control group design. The samples are 36 Balb/c mice divided into 2 groups; K group (control) which was given 0,1 ml CMC Na 0,5 % ; P group (treatment) which was given A. paniculata extract 16,608 mg/day that was dissolved in 0,1 ml CMC Na 0,5 %; The treatment was given from the 11th day pre inoculation until the 8th day post inoculation. The termination was being done in the 3rd, 6th and 8th day. The data from NO value of spleen product and parasit level was analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Kruskall Wallis test and continued to Spearman correlation test with SPSS for windows program. Results: NO value of spleen product was not significantly different, parasit level in the 6th day post inoculation in treatment group was significantly lower than control group. The significant correlation between NO value and parasit level was found in the 8th day post inoculation treatment and control group. Conclusion: The administration of A. Paniculata herbal extract did not affect NO value but it could decrease parasit level in the 6th day post inoculation. There was significant correlation between NO value and parasit level in the treatment and control group. Key Words: Andrographis paniculata, Plasmodium berghei ANKA, Nitric Oxide, parasitemia
