Abstract
Background : Tolak Angin Cair is a standardized herbal medicine that had been reported to increase T lymphocyte percentage and stimulate IFN-γ production in the previous research. T Lymphocyte and IFN-γ play a big role in abolishing the intracellular bacteria infection. Chloramphenicol is an effective antibiotic agent in the treatment of typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi. This research was being directed to observe the effects of combination between Tolak Angin Cair and chloramphenicol on survival rate of Balb/C mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Methods : This experimental research used post test only control group design with 32 female Balb/C mice as sample. They were divided into two groups that consist of 16 mice in each group. Group I was the control group that treated by single chloramphenicol. Group II was the treatment group that treated by the combination of Tolak Angin Cair and chloramphenicol. Before infection, the group II was being given Tolak Angin Cair as pre-treatment for one week. All groups were infected with S.typhimurium 105 CFU at the 8th day. The survival study followed per 24 hours until 14 days post infection. The survival rate was analyzed with Kaplan Meier test followed by Log Rank test for significant level when p<0,05. Results : The Kaplan Meier test showed the survival rate percentage of the two groups was 100% equal, because there was no deceased object during two weeks of treatment. Conclusion : The combination of Tolak Angin Cair and Chloramphenicol is the same effect as single chloramphenicol theraphy on survival rate of Balb/C mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Keywords : Tolak Angin Cair, Salmonella typhimurium, chloramphenicol, survival rate.
