Abstract

Background : Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a pathological condition, which can cause premature delivery, low birth weight, pelvic inflammatory disease, and even abortion. Therefore, BV screening on pregnant women is essential. Vaginal pH test is a screening tool for BV that considered practical, time and money saving, and no need specific training or devices like microscope. Objective : To evaluate sensitivity, specificity, PPV (Positive Predictive Value), NPV (Negative Predictive Value), and external reliability of vaginal pH test to screen BV in pregnant women. Method : This study was a diagnostic test. The samples were eighty two pregnant women in Poncol Primary Health Care, Semarang between May-July 2007. Inclusion criteria of this study were mothers on 2nd and 3rd trimester pregnancy. Samples were excluded if there was no consent, committed coitus in 24 hours before test and premature rupture of membrane. Vaginal pH measurement was done independently by investigator and midwife. This test compared blindly to gram stain examinate of vaginal smear. Result : Vaginal pH test has 90 % sensitivity; 19,35% specificity; 26,47% PPV; 85,71% NPV. External reliability of this test was 0.977. Conclusion : Vaginal pH test has high sensitivity and excelent reliability even though the specificity is low. However, in the screening, high sensitivity is needed more than specificity. Therefore, this study suggest that vaginal pH test can be used as a tool to screen BV in pregnant women. Key words : BV, pH test
