Abstract
Background: Cataract is the main cause of blindness in the world. Cataract is caused by the metabolism disturbance in lens that result in disturbance of light refraction to retina. Senile cataract or cataract related to age is the most occuring type of cataract. Surgery is the only one of cataract therapy. The aim of cataract surgery is to correct visual outcome. Surgeon is one of many factors influencing the visual outcome post cataract surgery. The objective of this study was to determine the difference of visual outcome post cataract surgery between ophthalmologist and resident in independent stage as surgeon. Methods: This study was retrospective with analytic design. The data was obtained from medical record of senile cataract patiens of dr. Kariadi General Hospital Semarang that had cataract surgery with ophthalmologist and resident in independent stage as surgeon, and had routine control until the eighth week post surgery in period of January 1, 2007 until December 31, 2007. Results: 30 cataract senile patients which cover 15 patients were operated by ophtalmologist and 15 eyes were operated by resident in independent stage. The difference of visual outcome post senile cataract surgery with ophtalmologist and resident in independent stage as surgeon statistically is not significant (p=0,500) (95% CI). Conclusion: There is no difference of visual outcome post senile cataract surgery between operation done by ophthalmologist and the one which is done by resident in independent stage as surgeon in dr. Kariadi General Hospital Semarang in period January 1, 2007-December 31, 2007. Key notes: visual outcome, surgeon, senile cataract
