Abstract
Background : According to WHO survey, Indonesia is the fourth biggest country with diabetic patients. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most important long term complication of diabetes mellitus, because of its high prevalence and bad prognose. Blood glucose level control will reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy. This control is difficult among diabetic patients, so HbA1c level was used as a long term control. The purpose of this study is to know the difference of HbA1c level between type II diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy and without diabetic retinopathy Method : The study was an observational research with cross-sectional study. The sample were type II diabetic patients with retinopathy diabetic and without retinopathy diabetic at Dr Kariadi General Hospital, Semarang during January 1st 2004 – December 31st 2006. The difference of HbA1c level was analyzed based on Mann-Whitney test. Result : HbA1c level of type II diabetic patients without retinopathy diabetic is 7,23±1,64 % and HbA1c level of type II diabetic patients with retinopathy diabetic is 8,52±1,92 %. The statistic result is p=0,001 ( p<0,05), which shows that there is a difference between those two groups. Conclusion : There is significantly difference of HbA1c level between type II diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy and without diabetic retinopathy. Keywords : HbA1c level, type II diabetes mellitus, diabetic retinopathy.
