Abstract

Background: Aloe vera is one of the medicine herbs which have a potential to be developed mainly for hair and scalp treatment . Ketoconazole is considered to be a big invention in the dandruff treatment for it works by blocking ergosterol synthesis that is an important component for membrane integrity of fungal cell. Zinc pyrithione is an antimycotic, effective for decreasing turn over rate of epidermis cells. Dandruff is the excessive scales production of the scalp without the signs of inflamations. Pityrosporum ovale is assumed to play an important role in evoking dandruff. Objective: To prove the effectiveness of 100% Aloe vera extract, 1% Zinc pyrithione and 1% ketoconazole in vitro to the growth of Pityrosporum ovale. Method: This research was using an experimental study. As samples were 30 patients of dandruff with clinical founding. Diagnosis of P. ovale was based on the result of microscopic examination of skin scrapping from samples using KOH 10% with blue black parker ink, and inoculation on the olive oil Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plus chloramfenicol 50μg/cc media on 370 C for 5 days. The colonies of P. ovale were diluted in sterilized 0,9% NaCl to make the solution equal to 0,5 McFarland standard. As many as 0,1 cc of solution was cultivated on the olive oil SDA media supplemented with 100% aloe vera extract, 1% zinc pyrithone and 1% ketoconazole. After that, the media were incubated on 370 C for 5 days. The data was analyzed by chi square test, with degree of significance of p<0,05. Result: 30 media of olive oil SDA which contained 100% Aloe vera,30(33.3%) were found (+)/positive Pityrosporum ovale growth and 0(0%) were found (-) /absence growth. And then 30 media which contained 1% zinc pyrithione,6(6.7%) were found positive and 24(26,7%) were found negative. And 30 media which contained 1% ketoconazole,5(5.6%) were found positive and 25(27.8%) were found negative. The result of chi square test is significantly different in 100% aloe vera extract, 1% zinc pyrithione, and ketoconazole 1% ( p=0,0000). Conclusion: Effectiveness comparison of 100% aloe vera extract, 1% zinc pyritihione and 1% ketoconazole in inhibiting the growth of P. ovale was significantly different. Key words : Dandruff, Pityrosporum ovale, 100% Aloe vera extract, 1% Zinc pyrithione, 1% Ketoconazole
