Abstract
Backgrounds: Cinnamomum zeylanicum is one of traditional medicine that posseses various potentials. One of them is antifungal activity which estimated coming from its volatile oil. The purpose of this research was to investigate the antifungal activity of Cinnamon zeylanicum’s volatile oil on Malassezia furfur in vitro. Methods: This experimental research applied “post test only control group design”. Sample of this research was volatile oil from Sari Jatra, plant farm of remedies. Volatilel oil that use in this research take from steam destilation. This volatile oil is separated using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). It use Silica Gel GF 254 as stasioner fase, Chloroform-Benzene (1:1) as mobile fase, and UV light 254 nm and 365 nm to make spot visible. To know its activity to Malassezia furfur, the oil was yielded by fluid dilution. Five fungi’s media as the treatment groups were being administered by different concentrations of volatile oil’s. There were 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, and 6,25% respectively. While control group was fungi media without administration of volatile oil. The identification of volatile oil’s composition was using thin layer chromatography method, where volatile oil was being dropped on chromatograph plat then inserted into closed container filled by expanding solution. Results: The volatile oil, obtained by steam destilation, was an clear yellow color, spesific stings aromas and easy to evaporate. The separation result using TLC show 3 spots that can be observe at wave length 254 nm. For microbiology research, all treatment groups were found to have no fungi’s growth. Kruskal Wallis test revealed significant difference for all treatment groups compared to control group. . Conclusions: Volatileoil effectively impeded or eradicated Malassezia furfur in vitro. Key words: Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Malassezia furfur, antifungal activity.
