Abstract

Background: Cymbopogon winterianus, jowitt which has been known as herbal medicine, containing volatile oil that may be antifungal. The purpose of the research was to know how Cymbopogon winterianus, jowitt volatile oil activity for Malassezia furfur in vitro. Method : Essential oil that use in this research take from steam destilation of basil leaf. This essential oil is separated using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). It use Silica Gel GF 254 as stasioner fase, Chloroform-Benzene (1:1) as mobile fase, and UV light 254 nm and 365 nm to make spot visible. To know its activity to Malassezia furfur, the experimental research with post test only control group design is done. Its use 5 kind of essential oil concentration that is 100%; 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25% and one control. The media that used is Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) + olive oil. The incubation is done at 37oC for 2 days. The evaluation is done by see the growth of colonies Malassezia furfur at surface of the media. Result : The essential oil was an clear yellow color, spesific stings aromas and easy to evaporate. The separation result using TLC show 5 spots that can be observe at wave length 254 nm. The result of microbiology research, after get statistic analized using Mann-Whitney test, is all consentration of volatile oil that used have activity to Malassezia furfur significantly different with p=0,003.. Conclusions : The result of antifungal activity shown that the volatile oil of Cymbopogon winterianus, jowitt has an antifungal activity for Malassezia furfur. Lowest concentration that used still have 100% activities. Keyword : Essential oil, Sereh, Malassezia furfur
