Abstract

Background: Fungal infection therapy by modern drugs has been commonly found to be ressistant. Volatile oil in cardamom might substitute the modern drugs. To know the usefulness of the volatile oil, a study on the components of its chemical substances and its activity against Malassezia furfur was done. Methods: The volatile oil used was obtained from steam distillation of cardamom. Isolation by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was done to know the components of the oil. Static phase of Silicon Gel GF 254 and dinamic phase of Chloroform-Benzen mixture (1:1), UV light 254 nm and 365 nm wave to make spot visible. To know the activity of the oil against Malassezia furfur, an experimental study with the post test only control group design was done, using 5 different concentrations of the volatile oil, i.e. 100%; 50%; 25%; 12,5%; 6,25% and a control group. The media used was Sabouraud Dextrose Agar. Incubation was done in the temperature of 37°C for 2 days. The assessment was carried out by observing the growth of the colony of the fungal to the surface of the media. Results: The isolation done by chromatography showed 8 spots observed in 254 nm wave length. From microbiology result, there was no fungus’s growth in medium that had been added Cardamom’s volatile oil. But there was fungus’s growth in control group. After being analyzed statistically by Mann-Whitney test, all concentrations of the volatile oil used have a significant difference against Malassezia furfur, p=0,0003. Conclusions: The 8 spots of the oil’s chemical components observed is likely to be in terpen group. The volatile oil has an activity against Malassezia furfur. The activity of the lowest concentration used was 100%. Keyword: Cardamom volatile oil, antifungal, Malassezia furfur
