Abstract

Background :One of the Zingiberaceae that has known as advantaged herbal is Zingiber zerumbet, Smith, contain of volatile oil that may be antifungal. The purpose of this research was to know how was Zingiber zerumbet, Smith’s volatile oil activity for Malassezia furfur in vitro. And was to know how many spots of Zingiber zerumbet’s volatile oil. Method : This research was an experimental study with “post test only control group design”. The sample of this research was volatile oil of Zingiber zerumbet, Smith which got from Ambarawa. These group was divided into 5 test groups with concentrations 100% v/v,50% v/v, 25% v/v, 12,5% v/v, 6,25% v/v and 1 control group was positif control which contain of media without volatile oil. For its identification, the method was thin layer chromatography on which the volatile oil was put a drop on chromatograph plate then the chromatograph palte was put in close erlenmeyer with developing liquid. Result : The growth of fungal was not found in this antifungal activity test. Kruskal-Wallis Test has used to explain about that growth, the result was significant (P<0,05) and followed by Mann-Whitney Test, significant from the concentration 6,25% (P=0,008). The results of analysis using thin layer chromatography was found 5 spots. Conclusions : The result of antifungal activity shown that the volatile oil of Zingiber zerumbet, Smith has an antifungal activity for Malassezia furfur. The results of analysis using thin layer chromatography was found 5 spots. Keyword : Zingiber zerumbet, Smith, Malassezia furfur, antifungal activity
