Abstract
Background: Sponge Haliclona sp is one of marine organisms that rich in active metabolites with anticancer potency. Eventhough it has been proven as one of the toxic organism, it only had in vitro toxicity study. This research aimed to investigate the effects of sponge Haliclona sp extract administration on histopathological appearance of Swiss mice liver. Method: An experimental post test only control group design research was applied in 25 male and 25 female Swiss mice. They were divided into 2 control groups (K) and 3 treatment groups (P). K1 and K2 were administrated by food pellets contained ethanol and daily food pellets only respectively. P1, P2, and P3 treated by level dose ethanol extract of sponge Haliclona sp: 0,15 mg; 1,5 mg; and 15 mg in 0,5 g food pellets daily. After 3 months (subchronic) treatment period, histopathological appearances were examined and the index of histopathology was assesed by using modified Knodell Score System (HAI). Result: P3 index histopathological median that valued 0,10 (0,080; 0,140) was the highest value of all median. Then from the lowest median, respectively: P2 (0,10); P1 (0,08); K2 (0,08); and K1 (0,06) Kruskal Wallis presented no significant differences (p = 0,058). Conclusion: No significant difference between liver histopathological appearance of Swiss mice administrated by sponge Haliclona sp exract and control group after 3 months (subchronic) period. Key Words: Sponge Haliclona sp, liver histopathological appearance, toxicity
