Abstract
Background: The common cause of dental erosion is an acid fumes, it can be either extrinsic or intrinsic in origin. The example of extrinsic acid is environmental acid such as sulphuric acid fumes from the sulphur mining at mount Ijen. Sulfuric acid fumes have corrosive characteristic and in a long period contact can cause dental decay. The aim of this study is to asses the influence of sulphuric acid fumes exposure on the incidence of dental erosion. Methods: This was an observational analytic study with case control design. The case were 30 people who worked as sulphuric miners at mount ijen and controls were 30 people who lived around the sulphuric mining but didn’t work as sulphuric miners. They were collected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Dental Erosion Index data were collected by direct examination of subjects and classified according to Eccles and Jenkins Erosion Index. The data were processed with SPSS 15.0 using chi-square test with 95% confidence interval and level of significancy 0,05. Result: There was a significant correlation between sulphuric acid fumes exposed with moderate/severe dental erosion (p=0,000); Prevalence Odds Ratio=42,25; 95% confidence interval 9,53 to 187,22. Toothbrushing (p=0,069) and bruxisme (p=0,254) have no significant correlation with moderate/severe dental erosion. Conclusion: This study showed that sulfuric acid fumes exposure influence the incidence of dental erotion and it is a significant risk factor of moderate/severe dental erosion. Wrong toothbrushing habits and bruxisme do not influence the incidence of dental erotion. Keyword: exposure, sulphuric acid, dental erosion
