Abstract

Background : Electrical injuries are damages on human bodies that leave burnt marks and can even cause organs impairment when a person is directly exposed to an electrical current. The factors determining the severity of electrical injury are electrical intensity, type of circuit, duration, resistance, voltage, and current. Cellular damages due to electrical shock depends on several mechanisms such as direct injury of electroporation, muscle tetany, heat and mechanical injury. All these mechanisms will then lead to organ failure. Objective : To determine the relation of various AC electricity exposure duration in water and the severity of myocardial impairment in Wistar rats Method : This was an experimental study using The Post Test Only Control Group Design. 25 Wistar rats samples were devided into 5 groups, that was 5 rats for each group. The P1, P2, P3 and P4 groups were given 220V of voltage and 110mA of current. The K group was not given any procedures, as for control/standard; The P1 group was exposed to electricity for 5 seconds; The P2 group was exposed to electricity for 10 seconds; The P3 group was exposed to electricity for 15 seconds; The P4 group was exposed to electricity for 20 seconds. Statistical analysis was done using Kruskal-Wallis test for unpair groups more than 2 and Post Hoc (Mann-Whitney U) test. Result : Nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test revealed significant differences for all five groups of hyperemia (p = 0,000). The mean value for control group was 5,60 ± 0,548 (means ± SD). The largest mean value was from P3 group (means ± SD 15,80 ± 1,304). Mann-Whitney U Test revealed significant differences between control group and P1 group (p = 0,007), control group and P2 group (p = 0,007), control group and P3 group (p = 0,008), control group and P4 group (p = 0,008), P1 group and P2 group (p = 0,007), P1 group and P3 group (p = 0.008), P1 group and P4 group (p = 0,008) and P3 group and P4 group (p = 0,011). While between P2 and P3 group revealed an insignificant value (p = 0,142). Conclusions : There was a severity of Wistar rats myocardial impairment related between the control group and experimental groups, also between each experimental group with various exposure duration.
