Abstract
Background : Previous research proved that mice with Omega-3 dietary had worse cellular immunity response than control. One of immune stimulator, Echinacea perhaps increases cellular immunity response at phagocytosis. This research was aimed to know effect of omega-3 dietary suppressing immune response and influence of echinacea to diminish impairment of cellular immunity at macrophage’s phagocytosis ability. Objective : The purpose of this research is to observe effect of echinacea as a trigger macrophage’s phagocytosis ability in BALB/c mice with omega-3 dietary compared with BALB/c mice with omega-3 dietary without administered echinacea. Method : An experiment using The Post Test Only Control Group Design was implemented to BALB/c mice. 24 male BALB/c mice were divided into four groups. K group were received no additional treatment, O group were given dietary omega-3 in their food, E group were given echinacea supplementation, and OE group were given dietary omega-3 and echinacea supplementation. At the 28th day, all groups were intravenously injected with live Listeria monocytogenes. Phagocytosis ability was measured with phagicytosis index. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc Test Bonferroni on 0,05 of significant degree. Result : There was significant difference in macrophage phagocytosis ability between OE group and O3 group (p<0,05). Phagocytosis ability in O3 group is lower than O3E group. Conclussion : There was significant difference, that omega-3 dietary can suppress cellular immune response at phagocytosis ability and administered echinacea is useful to repair this immune response. Keywords : Macrophage, Phagocytosis, Omega-3, Echinacea.
